Cake Smash Session at My Houston tx Studio

There’s something so special about celebrating your baby’s first birthday with a cake smash session. Between the tiny smiles, messy frosting, and all the personality that starts showing at this age, these sessions always end up being some of the most fun memories to document.

At Grettart, cake smash sessions take place at my natural light studio in northwest Houston near Jersey Village. My studio is designed to keep sessions simple, clean, and focused on your baby, with a neutral setup that photographs beautifully and keeps the attention on all the little expressions and moments.

What Happens During a Cake Smash Session?

Most cake smash sessions are scheduled around your baby’s first birthday, usually when they’re between 11 and 12 months old.

Sessions typically begin with a few clean portraits before bringing out the cake. This gives us time to capture classic milestone photos before things get messy. Once the cake is introduced, babies usually take a little time to explore it at their own pace, some dive right in immediately, while others need a little encouragement first.

Every baby reacts differently, and honestly, that’s part of what makes these sessions so fun and unique.

Simple and Timeless Styling

My cake smash sessions are designed with a clean and minimal approach. I focus on neutral tones, natural light, and simple setups that keep the attention on your baby rather than overwhelming decorations or busy themes.

This style helps create timeless images that will still feel beautiful years from now.

For outfits, I usually recommend:

  • Neutral colors

  • Soft textures

  • Simple patterns

  • Comfortable clothing baby can move in easily

Do Parents or Siblings Join?

Absolutely. Parents and siblings are always welcome to join for a few photos at the beginning of the session before the cake smash portion starts.

A lot of families love including a few family portraits since first birthdays are such a big milestone for everyone, not just baby.

What If My Baby Doesn’t Like the Cake?

This is actually very common.

Some babies love smashing the cake immediately, while others are more cautious and prefer to poke at the frosting slowly. There’s no “wrong” reaction, and I never expect babies to perform during sessions.

The goal is simply to capture genuine expressions and moments as your baby explores everything naturally.
